Description

Dried thyme has a concentrated, herbal aroma with earthy-camphor notes, slightly resinous and gently citrusy; it looks like small, gray-green leaves or crushed pieces that release an intense fragrance when heated. Its flavor is pronounced, warm, and lasting, which is why less is needed than fresh thyme. As a spice, it provides antioxidants (including thymol), trace amounts of vitamins A, C, and K, and minerals such as iron, manganese, and calcium, which are associated with anti-inflammatory effects and support for immunity and digestion. It works well in meat dishes, poultry, lamb, fish, soups, stewed vegetables, tomato sauces, and marinades, as well as in Mediterranean blends. To preserve its aroma, store dried thyme in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dry, and dark place; optimal freshness usually lasts 6–12 months.
