Salted herring fillets
Description
Salted herring fillets are characterized by a strong, salty flavor with a delicate hint of fish oiliness. The flesh is firm, juicy, and usually light gray with a shiny skin. They are rich in high-quality protein and unsaturated fats, primarily omega-3 fatty acids, as well as vitamins D and B12 and minerals such as selenium and iodine, which can support heart health, cognitive functions, and energy metabolism when consumed in moderation. In the kitchen, the fillets are great for marinating in vinegar with onions, preparing salads, sandwiches, herring snacks, festive dishes, and cold dishes with potatoes or sour cream. Store in the refrigerator in an airtight container, preferably submerged in oil or brine, and use within a few days after opening; they can also be frozen, keeping in mind that the texture may change slightly. If they are very salty, it is worth rinsing or soaking them beforehand.
