Description

Mussels have a delicate, slightly salty, ocean flavor and velvety, white-blue or creamy meat enclosed in hard, oval shells of varying colors. They are an excellent source of lean protein, omega-3 unsaturated fatty acids, vitamin B12, and minerals such as iron, zinc, selenium, and iodine, which support heart health, the blood system, and immunity. In the kitchen, mussels work wonderfully steamed with wine and garlic, in soups and chowders, risottos, paellas, pastas, and as an addition to salads or ceviche — they pair well with citrus, herbs, and butter. They should be stored cool (0–4°C), preferably alive in a breathable container covered with a damp cloth, and used within 24–48 hours; do not store in fresh water or airtight containers.
