Fresh lemon balm

🌱 Vegetarian 🌿 Vegan

Description

Fresh lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) has delicate, light green leaves with an oval shape and finely serrated edges, as well as an intense citrus-herb aroma and a mild, slightly minty flavor with a hint of lemon. It is low in calories and rich in antioxidants, including rosmarinic acid and flavonoids, and contains vitamin C and trace amounts of minerals. Traditionally, it is used as a remedy to relieve tension, support digestion, and facilitate relaxation, and studies suggest antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects; however, these effects are described as supportive, not a substitute for medical advice. In the kitchen, lemon balm pairs well with teas and infusions, desserts, salads, yogurt sauces, fish and poultry dishes, as well as beverages and cocktails, where it enhances freshness and citrus aroma. Store fresh leaves in the refrigerator wrapped in a damp paper towel in an airtight container or bag, and for longer storage, freeze in ice cubes with water or oil, or dry to preserve the aroma.
