Coconut milk (canned)
Description
Canned coconut milk is a thick, creamy liquid with a white to slightly creamy color and a delicate, sweet aroma of coconut. In the can, there is often a natural separation into thick cream and a watery part; when mixed, it achieves a uniform, velvety consistency. It is rich in fats, mainly medium-chain saturated fats (MCT), providing a lot of calories, little protein and carbohydrates, and trace amounts of minerals like iron, magnesium, and potassium. As a non-dairy product, it is a good option for vegans and those with lactose intolerance, but it should be used in moderation due to its calorie content. It is typically used in curries, soups, sauces, desserts, smoothies, and baked goods, where it acts as a thickener and adds a tropical flavor. Cans should be stored in a dry, cool place; once opened, the milk should be transferred to an airtight container, refrigerated, and consumed within 3–5 days or portioned and frozen for longer storage.
