Nutritional yeast

🌱 Vegetarian 🌿 Vegan

Description

Nutritional yeast is a slightly yellow, flaky topping with a delicate, nutty-cheesy note and a distinct umami flavor, made from deactivated Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. They have a dry, crumbly texture and easily dissolve in liquids, adding depth of flavor to dishes without intense sweetness or bitterness. They are a source of plant protein, fiber, and B vitamins; they often come in versions enriched with vitamin B12, making them a valuable ingredient in plant-based diets. They contain minerals such as zinc and selenium and are low in fat. In the kitchen, they are used as a seasoning or cheese substitute in sauces, soups, salads, on popcorn and pasta, and for thickening dips and sauces. They should be stored in an airtight, dry container in a cool, dark place; once opened, it is advisable to keep them tightly closed, and for longer storage, refrigerate.
