Onion
Description
Onion is a multi-layered bulb vegetable with a smooth skin in shades of white, yellow, or red, with a sharp, spicy taste when fresh, mildly sweet after cooking, and a characteristic aroma resulting from sulfur compounds. From a nutritional standpoint, onion provides few calories but is rich in fiber, vitamin C, minerals, and flavonoids (including quercetin) and prebiotic inulin, contributing to anti-inflammatory effects, immune support, heart health, and gut microbiota. In the kitchen, onion is a fundamental flavor base — it is suitable for frying, stewing, baking, and eating raw, pairing perfectly with meat, fish, soups, sauces, salads, and marinades. It should be stored in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place away from potatoes; once cut, keep it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use it within a few days.
