Powdered sugar (for dusting)
Description
Powdered sugar is a very fine, white powder with an intensely sweet, neutral taste and a silky, matte texture, often with a small amount of starch (e.g., corn) added to prevent clumping. It gives baked goods an elegant finish, subtly enhances the flavor of creams and fruits, without leaving a grainy texture. Nutritionally, it is practically pure simple carbohydrate (sucrose), providing calories (about 390 kcal/100 g) without significant vitamins or minerals; it can be a quick source of energy, but in excess, it promotes weight gain and tooth decay, so it is best used in moderation. It is most commonly used for dusting cakes, donuts, pancakes, for glazes, creams, and dessert decorations, as well as for sweetening beverages; before use, it is advisable to sift it through a sieve to remove lumps. Store in a tightly sealed container, in a dry, cool place away from moisture and strong odors — properly stored, it retains its properties for a long time.
