Sweetened condensed milk
Description
Sweetened condensed milk is a thick, creamy product with a sweet, milky-caramel flavor and a light cream color. It has a velvety, slightly sticky consistency that takes on a toffee note when heated. Nutritionally, it is a concentrated source of energy: rich in sugars and calories, it also contains milk protein, saturated fat, and mineral components, primarily calcium, along with small amounts of vitamins A and B2, making it a useful, albeit energy-dense, addition to the diet when consumed in moderation. In the kitchen, it works well as a base for desserts, creams, toppings, fillings for cakes, for making dulce de leche, and as a sweetener for coffee and cocktails. The canned product is shelf-stable and can be stored in a dry, cool place until the expiration date; once opened, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate, best used within 5–7 days. Freezing is possible, but it may slightly alter the texture.
