Rum (optional)
Description
Rum (optional) is a distillate with an amber to mahogany color and aromas of vanilla, caramel, and tropical fruits; the taste can be sweetish, slightly spicy, and may have oak notes if aged. As an optional ingredient, it adds depth and warmth to dishes, but can be omitted without losing the structure of the dish. Nutritionally, rum primarily provides calories from ethanol and is not a source of significant vitamins or minerals; in small amounts, it can have a relaxing effect, but excessive consumption is harmful to health. In the kitchen, it works well in desserts, sauces, marinades, for flambéing, and as a flavorful addition to drinks and cakes. Store in a closed bottle in a cool, dark, and dry place away from heat sources; after opening, the aromas may gradually dissipate, but the alcohol itself is stable.
