Mushrooms (optional)
Description
Mushrooms (optional) are delicate, meaty fungi with a mild, slightly nutty-umami flavor and smooth caps in shades of white or light brown. Their firm texture and subtle aroma make them pair well with many ingredients, adding depth to dishes without overpowering the flavor, which is why they should be considered a versatile addition to savory meals. Mushrooms are low in calories, low in fat, and rich in plant protein, fiber, B vitamins (especially niacin and riboflavin), potassium, selenium, and antioxidants; when exposed to light, they can also provide vitamin D. In the kitchen, they are suitable for frying, soups, sauces, casseroles, salads, pizza, omelets, and fillings. Store them in the refrigerator in a paper bag or loosely wrapped, dry and unwashed until use, and it’s best to consume them within a few days to maintain freshness and texture.
