Parma ham (prosciutto)

Description

Parma ham (prosciutto) is thinly sliced, translucent pieces with a pink hue interspersed with delicate strands of white fat. It has a subtle, slightly salty and sweet-nutty flavor with an intense, aging aroma and a soft, almost melting texture that perfectly releases its taste when bitten into. It is a source of easily digestible protein, B vitamins, iron, and zinc, although it also contains salt and some saturated fats, so it is advisable to consume it in moderation as part of a balanced diet. It is typically used in antipasti, salads, with melon, in sandwiches, on pizza, or wrapped around vegetables and seafood. Store in the refrigerator tightly wrapped in paper or foil, using the opened package within a few days; a whole leg can be kept in a cool, dry place or in the refrigerator, and freezing inevitably worsens the texture.
