Preparation steps

1

Start by preparing the ginger. Use a teaspoon to scrape off the thin skin from the ginger root – it's easier and more economical than using a knife. Then, cut the peeled ginger into thin slices, about 2-3 mm thick. The thinner the slices, the more flavor and aroma they will release into the drink.

Ingredients: Fresh ginger
The edge of a small teaspoon is perfect for peeling ginger. This way, you'll remove only the skin, minimizing the loss of flesh. Use a sharp knife for cutting to ensure the slices are even.
2

In a medium-sized pot (with a capacity of about 2 liters), place the sliced ginger, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise. Then pour in the entire liter of pear juice. Gently stir everything with a wooden spoon to evenly distribute the ingredients.

Ingredients: 100% natural pear juice, Fresh ginger, Cinnamon stick, Whole cloves, Star anise
Use a heavy-bottomed pot that evenly distributes heat and prevents the juice from burning on the bottom. At this stage, do not add lemon juice or honey yet.
3

Place a pot over medium heat and heat the mixture until it is very hot and the first bubbles begin to appear on the surface, just before boiling. When this happens, immediately reduce the heat to the minimum. Cover the pot with a lid and let the drink gently simmer (do not boil!) for about 15 minutes. This will allow the spices to release all their aroma without losing their valuable properties.

It is crucial NOT to bring the drink to a boil. Boiling the juice can make it cloudy and lose some of its flavor qualities. Gentle heating is the secret to a deep aroma.
4

Remove the pot from the heat. Now is the time to add freshly squeezed lemon juice – this will balance the sweetness of the pear and add freshness to the drink. If you are using optional ingredients, add a freshly grated pinch of nutmeg now. If you prefer a sweeter drink, wait 2-3 minutes until the mulled wine cools slightly, and only then add honey or maple syrup, stirring until completely dissolved.

Ingredients: Lemon juice, wildflower honey, Nutmeg
Adding honey to very hot liquid destroys its health-promoting enzymes. Always add it when the drink is below 60°C. Taste the drink before adding sweetener – pear juice is naturally sweet and you may find that you don't need additional sugar.
5

Prepare mugs or glasses made of thick glass. Place a fine mesh strainer on top and slowly strain the hot drink to separate it from the spices and slices of ginger. Fill the containers to about 3/4 full. If you like, you can decorate each serving by adding one of the 'cooked' cinnamon sticks or a star anise to the glass. Optionally, add a fresh slice of orange to each glass.

Ingredients: Plasterki pomarańczy
For serving, ceramic mugs or latte glasses that retain heat well are the best choice. Straining the drink will ensure a smooth, clear consistency, which is more pleasant to drink.

Fun Fact

💡

The tradition of drinking hot, spiced beverages dates back to ancient Rome, where wine was heated with spices to protect against the cold. Non-alcoholic mulled drinks based on fruit juices gained popularity in the 20th century as an alternative for the whole family, especially in Scandinavian countries and Germany during Christmas markets.

Tips

🍽️ Serving

Serve the mulled wine in transparent mugs with a handle to showcase its beautiful golden color and the floating spices. For an extra touch, you can stick a few cloves into a slice of orange and place it on the surface of the drink. It pairs wonderfully with crisp gingerbread cookies or apple pie.

🥡 Storage

Mulled wine can be stored in the refrigerator in a closed container (e.g., a jar) for up to 3 days. Before serving, simply warm it gently in a pot over low heat, without bringing it to a boil. After cooling, the flavors will meld even more, and the drink may become even more aromatic.
