Allspice (berries)

🌱 Vegetarian 🌿 Vegan

Description

Allspice in the form of small, round berries has a warm, complex aroma reminiscent of a combination of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, and freshly ground pepper. The berries are hard, dark brown with a distinct resinous note when crushed, making them convenient to use as whole spices or ground. Nutritionally, allspice provides few calories but valuable essential oils (including eugenol) as well as antioxidants and minerals such as manganese and iron; it exhibits anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and digestive-supporting properties. In the kitchen, it pairs well with meat stews, marinades, preserves, pickles, broths, spiced dishes, and Caribbean cuisine; it adds depth to baked goods and compotes. Store the berries in an airtight, opaque container in a cool, dry, and dark place; whole berries retain their aroma much longer than ground ones (up to 2–3 years).
