Cooking on low heat
Heat the mixture until it becomes very hot and the first bubbles appear at the edges of the pot – this is a sign that it is close to boiling. Immediately reduce the burner to the lowest setting. The drink should only gently steam, but not boil. Cover the pot with a lid, leaving a small gap, and let it 'brew' like this for about 20 minutes. During this time, the spices will release their essential oils and aromas.
Adding sweetness
After 20 minutes of gentle heating, remove the pot from the heat. Let it sit for a minute to cool slightly. Now add two tablespoons of honey or maple syrup. Stir slowly and thoroughly until the sweetener is completely dissolved. Taste the drink with a small spoon (be careful, it's hot!) and decide if it's sweet enough for you. If you prefer sweeter drinks, add another tablespoon.
Serving
Prepare heat-resistant thick glass mugs or cups. Using a ladle, carefully pour the hot drink into the vessels. You can use a small strainer to filter out the spices, or pour carefully, leaving them at the bottom of the pot. Place one of the previously prepared slices of fresh orange in each mug.
